  • That first link is pure cold warrior nonsense on par with the black book of communism. As for the second, I defer to the words of Mark Twain:

“THERE were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.”

Truthfully I support all of those revolutions as historical processes which have brought about necessary change, but the Haitians and the Russians fighting for their freedom from Slavery and Capitalism respectively are much more commendable than the Americans doing so because they didn't want to slow down their westward expansion.

  • New update for those of you following this story

We have established contact with the previously-AWOL owner, and after much discussion, we have determined that while there was an error in the auto-payment initially, the renewal funds were transferred manually to Sav and the auction continues despite that. We are currently appealing to Sav support with our domain credentials. We are also looking into whether an ICANN-compliant grace period was implemented prior to the rescinding and auctioning of the domain.

  • This almost certainly won't kill the Hexbear community, and frankly I don't think there's any way they will choose to pony up the auction money. This community has moved from reddit to discord to the fediverse and they'll probably just be on their backup/original domain chapo.chat for a month or two before switching over to whatever the admins decide to switch to, and then it will be business as usual under a new name.

Still there's a lesson here about setting up a durable online community - don't let someone control the domain registration with their personal account, you're just asking for something like this to happen. If they don't have one already the admins should set up some kind of organization that can "own" the new domain, donations, etc so that this can't happen again.

  • Yeah but on the other hand it'll hardly be the first time this community has moved. Looking at the frontpage of chapo.chat the userbase doesn't seem particularly bothered by the possibility.

  • I feel like when people make fun of this, it isn't so much Palpy coming back that they have a problem with, but the sudden and unexpected nature of it. It's such hack writing, and it only happened that way because audiences didn't like TLJ and the people making ROS decided to backtrack on every single one of TLJ's plot threads out of fear instead of making expanding on them for a satisfying finale.

  • The same thing happened to me on Pop OS.

Buuuut I've been on Debian for the past year with absolutely no issues. I think that, for 99% of computer users, the whole "rolling release" design for an OS is more trouble than its worth. Give me a stable release that I can get used to for a couple years, then one big update at a time - little updates every day that unexpectedly change and sometimes break things just make the experience of doing things more finnicky and unpredictable.

That was also the final straw that made me leave Windows, for the record.

  • It's really very simple. If you win your revolution and create a society better than the one you replaced, then you're a red fash tankie - only the revolutions that fail or never start in the first place are true socialism.

  • According to this document from 2021, most of them are "assistants" and "aides" of various types, although it seems there are a few thousand registered nurses and other licensed healthcare providers and technicians. Maybe they get licensed on a visa and then overstay the visa?

  • I had a friend who did this for a living, he had two phones so he would run Uber Eats and Doordash at the same time in order to try and optimize, and even then he spent a lot of time just sitting around because these apps are extremely inefficient (and later they started cracking down on people trying to increase their pay by doing both, dunno if it's still doable now).

  • Hear hear for living too far away from DD to be tempted by it. I used to waste a lot of money on it back in like 2021/22, but I moved to a town whose only "fast food" is a burger grill that's attached to the gas station and run by exactly one guy and if he's on break when you show up then you can either wait until he's done or leave and go to the grocery store.

  • If it were Kamala she would be doing exactly what Trump is doing. The Democrats have been thouroughly demonstrated by this point to be fascists, their fascist program just rolls a little bit slower and more competently than the Republican one.

The two-party system is a myth. A sham democracy. More fake that Putin's election numbers. America is ruled by a single political party which has two factions, and every ounce of energy that is spent trying to prop up one faction or the other is energy wasted.
