So awesome to read a happy story!
The biggest thing about Linux, and the main hurdle for most users, is trial and error with different OSes.
It’s as personal as clothing taste; from size to material and color. What will fit on your body, what materials you can tolerate and what you like style wise are akin to what kernel you pick, your drivers and your desktop environment.
For some, a classic T-shirt and jeans work great out-of-box and some may need hypoallergenic materials and a different cut. And that’s all okay! It’s also the beauty of Unix/FOSS.
Preface to say I don’t necessarily hold these views, just my observation:
- .ml is considered “tankie”
- Blahaj.zone is shitposty and pretty solidly trans-friendly/oriented
- .world is “neutral,” and I think federated with most instances (I joined this one bc I was brand new here and it seemed beginner friendly, but I lean further left so ¯(ツ)/¯ may instance hop in the future)
- Lemm.ee runs similar to .world but maybe slightly more right leaning
- Sh.it.justworks is predominantly techie
- Sopuli.xyz seems primarily meme-centric
- Feddit.org seems neutral-ish and more EU based, beyond that don’t know much
I’m sure there’s others I’m missing/stereotypes I’m wildly wrong about or not yet informed but that’s what I’ve gleaned so far.
Everything, including:
- giving a shit about the customer and having them permanently own their own games, even DRM-free like GOG?
- Not forcing online connectivity to access the library?
- Not shoving ads and spyware into the rest of the Amazon platform?
- Appealing ethically by paying all employees a living wage?
- Prioritizing innovation in expanding native Linux compatibility?

All we can hope for at this moment is enough Republicans get pissed off enough to push back and there’s enough party fracture to do - or at least slow - something.
The issue is infrastructure in most of the US. Provide public transport, usable sidewalks, and pedestrian-safe third spaces and this problem all but goes away. I didn’t get my license until I had to move away from the city, and it sucks.
PSAs are all well and good in their intentions but nothing changes until the realistic means become available.
