  • Ducks are omnivores. When they stick their heads underwater, they're trying to catch prey like small fish.

  • Ducks and chickens aren't the same animal. They're both birds, but plenty of birds eat other birds from other species.

  • I think for something like this, you'd rent cloud servers as you'd expect the number of concurrent users to change over time and ideally would be able to spin up more capacity when you need it without having to have those machines available all the time. You still need some kind of system that decides when to order more capacity with enough warning that it's actually available (you can tell AWS you want a VM immediately, but it still takes a couple of minutes to transfer your data onto it and boot it up, which is longer than people want to sit in a loading screen) and decides which servers to assign to which users.

  • There's a strong argument that the server architecture needed to be better at launch, but then the game sold more than an order of magnitude better than it was expected to, so no one would have noticed that it scaled badly had the player count been in line with their design and testing.

  • That's definitely something that gets listed as an advantage of The Digital Euro, and something that you can't do with Visa (although you can with PayPal), so if expect that Taler supports it.

  • Even accounting for disasters, coal power puts more radionuclides into the environment into the environment than nuclear for the same amount of energy. If you dig lots of stuff up and spew it all into the air, the small amount of radioactive material that's in coal and the rocks around it is much bigger than the tiny amounts of nuclear fuel a nuclear power plant gets through. If the only concern is radiation that persists on geological timescales, then swapping all coal for nuclear is an improvement. Other things that release surprising amounts of radiation include making things out of granite (it's usually got uranium in) and importing bananas and Brazil nuts.

    If it's changes on a geological timescale in general, then as fossil fuels form on a geological timescale (the clue's in the name), digging them up is going to take unfathomable amounts of time to undo. It won't even be as quick as the first time around, as most coal formed before ligninase evolved, so trees fell over and didn't rot and usually became coal, buy they're biodegradable now so need specific fossilisation-friendly conditions to become coal.

  • That problem isn't unique to nuclear. It wouldn't be newsworthy if a worn-out wind turbine blade was incinerated unsafely, and that's something that happens routinely and is much more damaging than dumping this quantity (about a beer crate full) of depleted uranium. The reason we're hearing about this incident is that the nuclear industry is held to a much higher standard than anything else in the energy sector. There are good reasons for that - the worst case scenario for a single fuckup is much worse - but a lot of it is just fear-mongering by fossil fuel companies who needed to lie to make something seem more dangerous than what they do, even before climate change was recognised.

    Nuclear is so much better than fossil fuels that even if we cut every corner and accepted a Chernobyl-scale indicent would happen a couple of times a year, it'd still be preferable over the gradual phase out of fossil fuels and resulting climate crisis we're on track for.

    • Ukraine's song wasn't particularly good this year, which will have made it harder for people to support if they cared about the integrity of Eurovision as a song competition.
    • Some people will just vote for whichever country most recently had a major tragedy and the initial attack on Ukraine was less recent than the initial attack on Israel. They won't necessarily think about anything that's happened other than that.
    • The Israel's contestant survived the October the 7th attack narrative has been pushed pretty hard, so that might have encouraged Israel supporters to watch Eurovision when they'd normally not have bothered. There wasn't anything equivalent to draw in Ukraine supporters who don't normally engage with Eurovision.
    • People voting for a particular country are going to have a much easier time than people voting for songs they like - there's only one Israel, but there are plenty of pop songs to split the pop fan vote.
    • If you watch/listen to a vox pop on the news, there are an astounding number of people who believe either that Israel have only killed armed Hamas combatants, have done a minimal proportionate response solely to rescue hostages, or have the right to ethnically cleanse Palestine because they think Hamas attacked first with no provocation and don't think ethnic cleansing is bad.

    the few times I've watched Eurovision, I've not agreed with the public or jury, so my definition of not particularly good might not be relevant.

  • This is a mod that only runs in a fan-made from-scratch recreation of the game's engine. Morrowind modders have basically every other game's modders beaten if you want to make it a competition.

  • Solar's a little bit less killy than nuclear (people die when mining raw materials and from falling off rooftops when installing panels) and wind turbines are a little more dangerous than nuclear (mining raw materials, falls during installation/maintenance and people burning to death during maintenance), but hydroelectric power is much more dangerous than nuclear (mainly from drownings after dams burst). Until very recently, nuclear was the safest means of power generation by a wide margin, so if safety is the main concern, there should be a lot more of it.

    A big reason for this is that a single nuclear power plant can power a city despite having the same footprint as a small village worth of wind turbines or solar panels and running for decades off a wheelbarrow of fuel, so there's much less for construction workers and miners to do and fewer opportunities for them to die. It only kills when there's an accident bad enough to make international news and remain in the public consciousness for decades, and accidents that bad have only happened a handful of times.

  • I wrote a script to randomly pick companions and I run it after every long rest. It'd be more convenient if it were a mod so it happened automatically, but it works.

  • The kind of spoiler tag you used is the kind that doesn't work on every Lemmy app. Fortunately, that's not a problem, as I've already seen Time Trap, and despite forgetting its name, do sometimes think about it.

  • Thermal problems are much less likely to kill hardware than they used to be. CPU manufacturers have got much better at avoiding microfractures caused by thermal stress (e.g. by making sure that everything in the CPU expands at the same rate when heated) and failures from electromigration (where the atoms in the CPU move because of applied voltage and stop being parts of transistors and traces, which happens faster at higher temperatures). Ten or twenty years ago, it was really bad for chips to swing between low and high temperatures a lot due to thermal stress, and bad for them to stay at above 90°C for a long time due to electromigration, but now heat makes so little difference that modern CPUs dynamically adjust their frequency to stay between 99.0° and 99.9° under load by default. The main benefit of extra cooling these days is that you can stay at a higher frequency for longer without exceeding the temperature limit, so get better average performance, but unless your cooling solution is seriously overspecced, the CPU will be above 99.0° under load a lot of the time either way and the motherboard just won't ramp the fan up to maximum.

  • The last time they had plenty of stock and cards people wanted to buy at the same time was the RX 200 series. They sold lots of cards, but part of the reason people wanted them was because they were priced fairly low because the cards were sold with low margins, so they didn't make a huge amount of money, helping to subsidise their CPU division when it was making a loss, but not more.

    Shortly after this generation launched Litecoin ASIC mining hardware became available, so suddenly the used market was flooded with these current-generation cards, making it make little sense to buy a new one for RRP, so towards the end of the generation, the cards were sold new at a loss just to make space. That meant they needed to release the next generation cards to convince people to buy them, but as they were just a refresh generation (basically the same GPUs but clocked higher and with lower model numbers with only the top-end Fury card being new silicon) it was hard to sell 300-series cards when they cost more than equivalent 200-series ones.

    That meant they had less money to develop Polaris and Vegas than they wanted, so they ended up delayed. Polaris sold okay, but was only available as low-margin low-end cards, so didn't make a huge amount of money. Vega ended up delayed by so long that Nvidia got an entire extra generation out, so AMD's GTX 980 competitor ended up being an ineffective GTX 1070 competitor, and had to be sold for much less than planned, so again, didn't make much money.

    That problem compounded for years until Nvidia ran into their own problems recently.

    It's not unreasonable to claim that AMD graphics cards being in stock at the wrong time caused them a decade of problems.

  • Lots of the criticism of the .ml admins isn't for being communists, it's for promoting fascism as long as it wears a red hat. Some of the strongest critics are out and proud communists, but who have the sensible opinion that doing what Stalin did and what Putin is doing are not ethical or effective ways to build communism.

  • That's reuse, not recycling. Glass is much more suitable for reuse than plastics as it's longer-lasting and can withstand temperatures hot enough and cleaning agents strong enough to ensure it's food-safe after being collected, but you need quite a bit of infrastructure to get the bottles back to the company whose products they're for. At least for the parts of a bottle's life that the manufacturer's responsible for, it can be much cheaper to make fresh plastic, and if they can externalise the environmental cost of disposing of a plastic bottle (i.e. blame the consumer), it can look better for their carbon footprint etc., too.

  • Something else worth noting is that instance admins do a lot more moderation than Reddit admins did, so the burden on the moderators for individual communities can be smaller. lemmy.ml in particular has a reputation for having admins who actively intervene a lot.

  • The Olympics have allowed trans women to compete against cis women since the 90s, and yet there's never been a trans medalist. If there was a genuine advantage to being trans in sport, at least one country in the past three decades would have loaded their team with trans women and cleaned house. However, taking enough hormones to make a masculine body into a feminine one after it's already grown means you've got way less testosterone than a cis woman, so that counters out any initial advantage. Claiming otherwise is misinformation. Spreading misinformation to the detriment of trans people is transphobic.

  • It depends on which aspects of the environmental impact you're looking at, as melting glass to recycle it can be much more damaging than landfilling several plastic bottles if the glass furnace is heated by fossil fuels. If glass bottles are washed and reused, they're much better than plastic, but that's rarely what happens.
