  • I post videos a few times a year to share events with family. I just posted a few yesterday. I can't in good faith continue to post to YT and encourage my family to use it as the platform declares war on their users.

But what else is there that allows me to post videos for free and my family can just watch them without having to install a new app, register for yet another service or configure some obscure plug in?

  • I have one in the kitchen, garage and utility (furnace) room. 2 were given to me by my insurance agent! The 3rd one I bought for my garage because, duh!

  • It references a sort of partnership with K9 Mail on android, but later says they're looking to expand Thunderbird into the iOS & Android space. Either they'll be direct competitors of each other or they'll start to blend into each other. I'm wondering which.

  • In the early kernel (think pre 1.0), I "fixed" the CPU scheduler for performance. I gave too much privilege to user processes, who refused to relinquish control back to the OS.

Another time I was working on a multiprocess bootup configuration (before systemd) in a configuration where the main process would orchestrate the workers. Well, the main process would fork a child to do the work, then the child process would fork a child process to do it's work. It was infinite delegation and I ran out of pids.

  • Is it hard to get citizenship? Can't you just live there with some sort of visa?

  • I just joined. Now what?

  • Pants!

    I should move somewhere warm.

  • I've seen this before and got a chuckle, so I gotta wonder who is downviting this and why?

  • The first step is important and well studied. Double your results with exercise by doing it outside. Again, it's well studied that being with nature improves your mood, so why not take a hike through the woods or along a river? Put your phone away, leave the earbuds at home and just focus on the moment.

From time to time, when the weather is good and everyone's still asleep, I'll take a hot cup of tea outside to the woods near my place and sit on a fallen tree and just be quiet. It improves my mood all day. I did it during the first snowfall of the year during covid and could hear the snowflakes hitting the leaves. I could still hear the yelling from inside the house, but somehow it was not my problem in that moment.

  • I'd like to echo this point. As soon as you set your objective to pull in Reddit users, you've set yourself up as the "Reddit alternative", you'll be chasing Reddit features and attempting to please the Reddit users. To succeed at this game is to essentially end up creating Reddit, but never surpassing.

In my opinion, Lemmy needs to have a clear mindset on what Lemmy is and what it isn't, then stick to that.

  • I should have said, "visible by all the 'partners'".

  • What do people put at a place like McDonald's or WalMart? Typically there are no signs saying "customers only", but it'd be strange to park there and walk somewhere. Same for a church, except I've lived in some places where the church parking lot was used by the people using a nearby bus stop.

  • I still file by mail because if somebody were to do something with my taxes in transit, it's a federal crime vs e-filing where everybody whose network it passes through gets a copy, legally.

  • Ironically (or not), mine began with piracy. When I was little, I had no money, but I had a computer and lots of time. I figured out how to get games and apps that I wanted and a part of that was covering your tracks.

Fast forward to college and learning about Linux. It blew my mind that you could do something like apt-get install doom and then there it was. No piracy necessary. I dove head first into FOSS.

Then along came Google with lots of free stuff. Great, I thought, but this was different. I think I knew that they were harvesting and selling your personal data, but it was free so I let it go. One day, I was on a site and there was an advertisement for something very personal that I had been referenced in an email. The thing is - this was at my work computer which I never used my personal credentials for.

I started noticing things following me around the internet and got creeped out. I started reading about what's really happening and got very uncomfortable. That's when I started focusing more on keeping a clean profile.

  • I agree that this is a boogeyman law.

I don't understand the threat to revenue streams. From gun manufacturers? Would anybody who is allowed to purchase a gun bother with a 3D printed one other than for the novelty of it?

My biggest gripe is that I feel that politicians usually don't get involved in creating laws until way late. Think laws around the regulation of AI or cloning or genetically modifying humans. Is there a credible threat related to printed weaponry? I seriously doubt it.

I saw something similar a few weeks ago on the national news to allow local police to shoot drones around regulated airspaces. In this case it's a football game. The stadium security said that a drone flew in and distributed pamphlets but could have easily carried in a bomb. Again, this is a theoretical threat, but they're more likely concerned about illegal filming of a sporting event.

  • That was sort of my point. I'm going to go out on a limb and say without any research that bears kill more people every year than 3D printers.

  • I don't even own a gun, so maybe somebody with more experience can correct me, but I do believe that many states, if not all, require a background check and waiting period. I assume there are certain crimes that remove your right to own a firearm. There are (or were) loopholes for purchasing guns at gun shows where a background check and waiting period are infeasible.

As for other weapons, there aren't such provisions, but it may depend on the weapon. A bow and arrow, hunting knife or machete can be purchased at any wall-Mart. A grenade? I'm not sure.

  • What's the difference between an air fryer and a convection toaster oven. Everybody's so excited for air fryers but AFAIK, both just blow air around.

  • This is the only answer for me. Bonus points if your .login file does a background git pull.
