  • Libretorrent https://gitlab.com/proninyaroslav/libretorrent is free and open source and isn't anywhere near as shady as uTorrent.

Material Files https://github.com/zhanghai/MaterialFiles is a free and open source file manager that allows decompression, archive viewing and compression of files and folders using 7zip, tar or zip. If you prefer the command line, p7zip CLI can also be installed on Termux, https://github.com/termux/termux-app both free and open source.

I don't edit photos or play many games on android so I don't have any alternatives there but Lemuroid https://github.com/Swordfish90/Lemuroid is a free and open source console emulator with a whole bunch of consoles built in and Dolphin https://github.com/dolphin-emu/dolphin emulates the GameCube and Wii

  • You probably need to set up split tunneling in your VPN app on your phone. Either enable split tunneling for the apps on your phone that you use to connect to your home server or enable split tunneling in the VPN app for the local IP address of your home server so that you can use any apps to connect to your home server while still having the VPN enabled for any other websites you visit in those apps. I know ProtonVPN and Mullvad both automatically have split tunneling set up for local IPs on PC but not for Android, this would explain the differences between your laptop and phone

  • If you go with a refurbed website, make sure that the phone has the ability to use OEM unlock. Some refurbed sites sell Verizon versions of the phones and don't disclose this and Verizon along with other US carriers block OEM unlocking which means you can't install another OS. There is no known workaround as far as I know. I had this issue before with a refurbed Pixel 4

  • Online ads, they were so annoying to deal with, I tried Adblock (don't use it) then ABP (don't use it) then finally I found UBlock Origin (absolutely use this) and just seeing the amount of unnecessary connections on every single website annoyed me even more. On mobile I used Adaway and looking at the logs for that annoyed me so much I switched to LineageOS.

I "upgraded" to windows 10 and I couldn't deal with how annoying it was with all the bloatware and random notifications so I switched to linux

  • Proton requires an email because they offer a free tier, without some way of regulating users their servers would be overrun with bots and spam...

The difference between what recently happened with Mullvad and what happened in the article you linked about Proton is that with Mullvad they were looking for general user data for VPN usage, not a specific persons email account like with Proton.

If a copyright holder or law enforcement is in a torrent swarm and logs all of the IP addresses of the seeders of Frozen II and then goes looking for the users of those IPs then ProtonVPN and Mullvad VPN would have the same response - No logs, no idea

Sure, not having to register with an email with Mullvad and IVPN is great but they're not offering port forwarding any more so we recommended ProtonVPN and you said you didn't trust them because they followed the law, if Mullvad or IVPN offered email services then they would have to do the same thing Proton did.

If you make a ProtonVPN account with the sole purpose of torrenting then all you have to do is not publicise your Proton email along with the fact that you're torrenting and then nobody can really do anything about that because law enforcement can't go to Proton like they did with that guy because they don't know the account linked to you.

I didn't hear about the onion issues, but again unless Proton was specifically told to log specific users IPs then even if they were redirected, their IPs wouldn't have been logged in those instances.

Its still user error, he must have publicised his Proton account, law enforcement found out about it and his IP was logged under Swiss law, thats user error. Its crappy that thats law but if you're going to do things like that then you should know how to protect yourself properly

  • Proton doesn't keep logs by default unless legally forced to.

Law enforcement would have to know the email account to make them log it. If they know the email account you're using with ProtonVPN then thats user error and bad OpSec.

In the example you linked, if law enforcement didn't know the guys email address then they couldn't have forced Proton to log his IP.

  • Proton only started logging his IP after they were legally forced to do so, just like any other law abiding company would have to do.

Proton offers an onion site of Protonmail which the activist should have been using since he allegedly committed

theft and property damage, crimes - the latter two - that enable surveillance

this is a case of user error and bad opsec, not a company bending over backwards to share their users information. If you're going to do things that are likely going to get you arrested, no matter how noble the cause, make sure you have excellent OpSec

  • Funnily enough some of the best phones to avoid google and improve online privacy are the google pixel phones.

GrapheneOS supports pixels and is regarded as the most privacy and security focused ROM atm.

Other options are vanilla builds of custom ROMs, which don't include gapps, LineageOS being the best known with the most amount of supported devices.

Another privacy focused, but less well known ROM is DivestOS which offers support for a good range of devices and allows for the bootloader to be relocked on some devices. The main Dev for this ROM is the same guy that develops the Mull android browser.

These are the ones I've had personal experience with but there are other out there like CalyxOS and /e/ that are marketed as privacy respecting ROMs but I have not tried these before.

Unfortunately, even though Android is open source, google likes to ensure that all android phone vendors include google play services with their phones. They do this by having most android apps integrate with google services for things like real time notifications.

If you choose to avoid google, some applications won't work properly such as banking apps and google pay and notifications for apps may not work properly either, there are ways around some of these issues such as microg and magisk modules but magisk requires root access which can make your phone less secure.

If you decide you want to install a custom ROM make sure the phone you have can unlock the bootloader, I don't think Verizon or other carriers allow unlocking the bootloader of the phones they sell, this is different to network unlocking, and right now there is no known way to unlock these phones bootloaders and the companies don't provide any support to do this.

So the best thing to do is buy directly from the manufacturer such as google. I don't have experience with Samsung phones but I know that they have their own security implementation which may limit the ability to unlock some of their phones but I'm not too sure. XDA forums are a good place to see what phones have custom ROM support and if the phones bootloader can be unlocked.

There are only really 4 ways to avoid google on your phone these days

    1. No phone/ dumb phone
    2. GNU/Linux based OSs such as Ubuntu touch or System76 phones
    3. Custom ROMs without gapps
    4. iPhone

The first 2 options aren't really viable for most people.

The 3rd option is my favourite and the 4th option is my worst nightmare

  • What's new, Snowden blew the whistle over a decade ago now. Taxpayer's money being used to fund mass surveillance.

And now more recently taxpayer's money being used to buy their information from private companies all in the name of national security.

They want to ban TikTok because they don't want a government entity from harvesting their data but its fine when the US government does it because they always paint themselves as the good guys and not as the biggest and longest running group of international terrorists ever...

  • Pretty sure Reddit can't ban people for promoting/linking to competitors sites as there is EU regulations in place to prevent this.

This issue was raised when Twitter tried to stop people from linking to their Mastodon accounts. Twitter put the policy in place and then quietly removed it soon after.

If you really believe that you were banned for promoting Lemmy then you should mention this in your appeal but as others have mentioned it seems like the issue was spam.

And sure maybe they were waiting for any reason they could get to ban you because you were promoting Lemmy and they got you on spam, always gotta read the contract/TOS to make sure the other party doesn't get you on a technicality
