Look at that comment yo upvote ratio. A human user could easily tell just from that the advice is questionable, but the machine thinks it's a highly engaging comment and values it more than a highly upvoted comment with no discussion under it.
It's like the third season of Westworld where the AI is telling everyone what to do (e.g. assigns them jobs, determines if they're going to be criminals, etc) and people just blindly accept it.
Best tasting bleach there is, and no one knows more about this stuff than me. It’s a good way to stop the virus. We can bring this into the body, you know, almost like a cleaning. Or hit the body with a very powerful light. Sounds interesting. We’ve got guys looking into that, too.
11-year-old posts are fine. It’s not like pizza-cooking techniques become obsolete; if there’s old wisdom I still want it.
It’s just, you know, better not to quote shitposts, you know?
This thing where search engines only want new results is actually quite bad. I was looking for advice on exactly how to physically arrange the wiring and connections for some batteries in parallel. SearXNG gave me great results that were really helpful from electricians posting on old forums of varying age. DDG and Google only gave me bullshit SEO sites. But they were new!
That post on mastodon claiming that it strictly came from a reddit post could purely be coincidental. If you Google "how common is glue in food," you'll find a ton of links talking about commercials using stuff other than food in food commercials/ads to make the food/drink look more "vivid/full/whatever."
Don't browse mastadon. I came to this conclusion myself after finding the reddit post in question. The answer from Google wouldn't pass a plagiarism test, the wording was nearly identical.
As a large language model I cannot comment on the ethical implications or legality of glue on pizza.
It is important to note that there are a variety of edible glues used in food production and if you are unsure, it is best to consult a professional. Remember, it is always best to bring any ethical or legal concerns about food glue to a registered dietician or other dietary professional.
I really hope we don't have to watch AI to go though all the various shitshow phases of reddit history, like the racist subs, fat people hate, jailbait, etc.
This image convinced me to make pizza. No glue, though I guess it technically involved flour and water (and starch and/or cellulose on the pre-shredded cheese)
A screenshot of the summary it generated, shared on X, shows it responded with "cheese can slide off pizza for a number of reasons," and that the user could try adding "about ⅛ cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce to give it more tackiness."
Google started testing the AI Overviews feature in the US and the UK earlier this year and announced it would roll out more widely by the end of 2024.
In other cases, as Business Insider's Peter Kafka points out, one issue with generative AI engines is that they can just make things up.
Social media users have shared other examples of AI Overviews generating inaccurate responses, including when it said a "dog has played in the NHL."
They added that the "vast majority of AI Overviews provide high-quality information" and that it carried out "extensive testing" before it launched the feature.
Google didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.
The original article contains 375 words, the summary contains 163 words. Saved 57%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
The NHL is set to celebrate the playoff season with a new tradition: the Stanley Pup.
The hockey league is partnering with the nonprofit Petco Love to air the one-hour special next month, when some very talented ice dogs will get a chance to rollick around the rink.
Each of the NHL’s 32 teams will have its own canine representative, but only the pups representing the 16 Stanley Cup Playoff contenders will get a chance to show off their skills.
Many of the hockey hounds hitting the ice will also be available for adoption from shelters or rescue groups in their respective cities.
