Execution is not punishment, because the convicted person's human experience ends.
Execution is not rehabiliatory, for the same obvious reason.
Execution is not preventative of the same person reoffending any more than imprisonment is.
Execution is not preventative of other people committing the same offense, because the act of execution is removed so completely in time and space from the crime and conviction. And it has to be so removed because of how completely wrong the justice system is kind of all the time.
Execution serves one purpose, and that is vengeance. The State should not be in the business of delivering vengeance to certain people.
Execution also doesn’t reduce offense rates because the severity of punishment doesn’t factor into decision making above “life ruining if convicted” it’s the certainty of being caught that reduces rates. The uk used to hang pickpockets in the town square and you’d get your pockets picked if you stood there watching.
I wonder if this would actually deter would-be rapists or incentivize them to simply murder the child so they can’t talk. This seems incredibly reckless without data to support killing these criminals actually reduces child rapes.
Also, I think they might be surprised when these highly conservative legislative bodies execute their hometown pastors instead of drag queens.
I'm against death penalty even for the most heinous crimes for several reasons but the main one being that you'll never going to get a justice system that's 100% accurate in their convictions. Jailing an innocent person is already awful enough but just imagine the sense of injustice when sitting on a death row for a crime you didn't commit. This is an issue especially on cases that provoke strong emotional reactions on people. The default is to believe those accusations and defending yourself just makes one seem more guilty. The mere accusation of rape can already ruin a person's life let alone when the victim is a child.
