What's going on in your life?

  • Ok, so I guess I'll be the only one posting in this thread again 🫤

Today I came home with an aggressive feeling since I had to sit through an hour of a god-awful movie that my classmates in nursing school wanted to watch while our teacher was away. It was one of those by Adam Sandler's company and like most of his stuff, a good case of "everyone sucks here": women are portrayed as either objectified sex symbols or as crazy, obnoxious psychos. Men are either cliché annoying arrogant douchebags or meticulous, naïve and emasculated losers. How anyone can find this garbage funny is beyond me...

But I used the energy from the rage for something productive at least: I went through my bathroom shaving den and sorted out everything I haven't used since ages and won't use anymore. Surprisingly, a lot of stuff landed in the bag. Since I only shave my head nowadays, almost all alcohol based aftershaves are a no-go. Unfortunately there aren't lots of artisans who offer their scents as balm or tonic, but at least a few do. The best part: Yourshaving from Spain had their 11th anniversary today and had a special discount, so I already stocked up on new stuff that will fill some gaps. Like I said in my SOTD post yesterday, it's surprising how one's taste can change in terms of scents. Well ok, since I am not on Reddit anymore I also don't chase hypes and trends anymore and just buy what I will definitely like.

Speaking of this, are there any ideas how we could promote our little instance here? Sometimes it feels a little barren, even though it's cozy with just a handful of members. Don't get me wrong, you're all doing a terrific job around here... I just wish there'd be a bit more activity and discussion.

      That's a good question.

It seems to me that the posts that get the most outside interaction from the wider fediverse are the question posts and the show and tell posts. I.e., the non-scheduled things. Posting more things like that might help. It also takes a lot of time😅

Essentially, we'd need to put in more effort (and consistently so) to produce interesting content, and advertise the posts on other platforms. Personnally, I get tired just thinking about that.

I really like our cozy instance. Sure, sometimes I'd like to have more friends, more discussion, and more excitement here, but, I'd like people here to be here because they like our boring style of doing things, not because of a show we put up for them. So I don't have a good answer.

I actually also like the people who are here to just be here just out of passion for traditional wetshaving as a hobby, not for show. But I'm strongly agreeing that we'd need more standalone posts of interesting stuff since that'd be what sets us aparts from other forums and Reddit. Time and energy consuming as they will be, I'd gladly try to contribute some interesting articles. I already thought about an essay about head shaving with different types of safety razors, since I have a lot of experience with different blades and razors doing just that. Could be a fun little guide to create.

Another minor suggestion I have is that we should probably do more of our own thing apart from the Reddit sub. A lot of the posts on Thursday follow themes that most people who will visit our instance know nothing about if they don't visit the corresponding Reddit thread. Maybe we could do some themes of our own, even if it's just bi-weekly... This could be a interesting opportunity to facilitate more engagement.

And while I also strongly agree that it's nice to have a cozy little instance here, I also can't deny that I am a bit disappointed that we didn't attract more members to make the switch or at least be active on both instances. I actually love the fediverse idea of not being tied to greedy corporate scumbag overlords and that all we do is by us, for us. I just hoped this bright idea with so much potential would've drawn a few more people in. I know a lot of old Reddit subs migrated to Discord, but unfortunately I had to quit using that long ago since Discord is much more focused on real-time activity and interaction and that's really time and energy consuming for me.

I know this is a lot of complaining at a high level, but I assure you and everyone else around here that I'll gladly do my part to make things more interesting and facilitate more discussion and activity around here. ✌🏻
