Buried the lede a bit with that title, considering the plane was actually shot down
- I think the explanation is simple. He thought that by walking on Moscow, he'd rally the oligarchs and power players who were on the fence, and when he got into Moscow Oblast he realized the opposition hadn't materialized so he had no choice but to negotiate.
  
  He probably knew himself his days were numbered.
