  • "Drag is trans blackface"

Girl, drag was how many trans people came to understand themselves. No doubt people like RuPaul have a hell of a history of transphobia, but the art form itself is still incredibly queer.

    • That is by far the most braindead take I've heard. It's on par with the TERF argument that "trans women are just doing woman blackface"

      • Yuuuup. Trust me, I went round and round with them saying all the same sort of things, but it went nowhere. Idk, she had a lot of other issues going on so I let it go, but its still a surreal conversation.

        • Yeah, sometimes people just don't want to listen to reason. As frustrating as it is, there's not much one can change about it. What a weird ass take on their part. How the hell do you even come to that conclusion.

Insecurity. I'll admit that seeing people in drag can still make me feel uneasy and insecure in myself. It reminds me of my physical flaws. Since I was a little kid, I felt that "guy in drag" is what I'd look like if I tried to be at all feminine, and seeing a guy in drag has been a reminder of that feeling.

So yeah, insecurity caused by internalized homophobia and transphobia can lead to weird rationalizations for feelings of dread.

Obviously, there's nothing wrong with drag. This is a personal issue that needs to be resolved internally.

    • genuinely curious but what did RuPaul do? Ive never paid attention to drag cuz the culture surrounding it has always seemed mostly like really obnoxious straight ally types lol.

10,000% correct. Drag has existed as a musical/comedy art form framed around gender and sexuality. The only thing Ru did was bring that to TV, by sanding down the queer roots. When a cis person telling me how much they love RuPaul, all I see is 🚩's and I make or point of explaining the difference of trans and drag.

But anyways, it's not just one thing but years of Ru being openly transphobic. Such as calling HRT a performance enhancing drug, and forcing trans queens on the show to entirely stop while competing. Tons of times using the t slur, and then laughing at people asking him to stop. Having the fan mail segment called "reading shemale". And all this is separate from Ru having a bookstore selling mein khamph, Turner diaries, irreversible damage and books by DeSantis. Or..... his oil fracking side hustle. (yes seriously).

Ru has always been in it for the money.

And that's just just the stuff off the top of my head. This article has more info. but this quote really highlights the damage he has done selling out queer culture.

In 2012, after Lance Bass issued an apology for using the word “tranny” and cited its use on RuPaul’s Drag Race as part of why he thought it might be okay, RuPaul was openly annoyed that Bass should have to walk that back. “I love the word ‘tranny,’” he insisted. “And no one has ever said the word ‘tranny’ in a derogatory sense.”
