With Firefox + uBlock Origin you can still be Rick Rolled!
133 0 ReplyI was gonna say, you guys get YouTube ads? I'm still blocking them, so I'm still a target for Rick-rolling.
90 0 ReplyI still get ads on my TV unfortunately.
7 0 ReplyAre you sure your adblocker is working? I was having trouble with mine just yesterday when i found out ublock origin has an additional setting you need to click to keep blocking YouTube ads now
7 0 ReplyNever gonna rickroll you, never gonna let you get rickrolled https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/antirickroll

Yay! Like 5% of the market can still enjoy the prank.
19 3 ReplyThe same 5% that recognize the URL and don't fall for it
14 0 ReplyThe 95% get hit with an even better Rickroll, the Skill Issue.

Good news, everyone! You can self-host the Rickroll via a docker container!
82 0 ReplyBad news unfortunately, I’ve been too busy banging rocks together to know what docker is 🗿 :(
39 0 ReplyThere are dozens of us! Dozens!
I've come to find Lemmy is the land of the trans-programmer-communist and I'm here for it lol
37 2 ReplyPretty sure docking is gay sex slang for putting penises in penises.

I always look up "rickroll no ads" because of this. Also it's a different YouTube url so those nerds who recognize the rickroll url won't recognize my link
Here's where I learned this trick, they have a lot of other cool stuff too: https://youtu.be/uHgt8giw1LY?feature=shared
35 0 ReplyI just see Rick Astley's face with a play button. The main issue is that modern browsers disallow playing sound without user interaction.
16 0 Reply"XcQ, link stays blue" doesn't make me a nerd. :'(
I mean, I am, but I don't think I'm allowed to be on lemmy if I'm not, so I don't think it's relevant.
11 0 Replyi can’t believe i fell for this
9 0 ReplyI always look up "rickroll no ads"
Now that's a red flag right there.
3 0 Replyit's a different YouTube url so those nerds who recognize the rickroll url won't recognize my link
I love that automatic inline link previewing kills that tactic with disgusting ease lmao 🖕😘
2 0 ReplyYea it's pretty funny imo. I didn't intend for it but it adds to the joke

One of my favourite things about the rick roll is how much Rick Astley embraces it, rather than being salty that his song got memed. He seems like a great guy.
31 0 ReplyHe did an AMA on Reddit, and someone successfully rick rolled him. It was glorious, and he took it in stride.
28 0 Replyplease provide a link to that, I need to see it

I'd imagine monetization of the video with tens of millions of views doesn't hurt.
11 0 ReplyWhy wouldn't he embrace it? It put him back into the spotlight after 20 years!

I’d rather get Rick rolled than watch an ad tbh
31 1 ReplySkill issue, just use a different video, no one said it had to be the official, monetized one.
27 1 ReplyAlso if your target doesnt have ublock then maybe they dont deserve to get rickrolled 🤔
34 0 ReplyIt's a privilege not a right.

Don't unmonetized videos still play ads sometimes? I seem to remember that being a really questionable conflict of interest issue a while back (because it would mean it's technically more profitable for youtube to demonetize your videos than monetize them).
20 0 ReplyYou know the rules, and so do I.
8 0 Replyyes but also no one said you had to use youtube

I guess we need to go back to goatse then
13 0 ReplyThe warm welcoming gape
9 0 ReplyYou dare speak its name??
7 0 ReplyFunny story. I recently tried to find it. Like actively searched for it... and came up with nothing but a few screen shots of the dudes face. I also tried to find any kind of gore or death images using any of the major searcg engines. (I wanted to send something horrible to a scammer that was texting me when I posted something for sale.)
The Internet of old has been sanitized to prevent finding undesirable things. It's sad.

Short term solution: convince other users to use piped.video or FreeTube
Long term solution: convince creators to post on PeerTube13 1 Reply6 0 Replythe second one will never work as there's no audience, nor money to gather on peertube
3 0 ReplyIf popular creators start talking about PeerTube, there will eventually be an audience there, which means there will be money too.

10 0 ReplyMaybe commercialization is a good thing after all. 🤔
1 0 ReplyOh I am sad now :(((((
1 0 ReplyCapitalism has plenty of problems. However in this case, who's gonna pay for the hosting and serving of the video? Fucking stupid post.
1 3 ReplyThe industry that allowed Rick-rolling to come into being wouldn't exist without the free market
