The country is one of more than 50 scheduled to argue before the United Nations’ highest judicial body over Israel’s “occupation, settlement and annexation” of Palestinian territories.
What an extremely powerful argument. South Africa deserves a great deal of respect for its recent actions. Shame on the American and European powers whose complicity is absolute.
It’s painful that we are allowing this. In 1988, the US, Britain, and Israel were still fighting the UN to stop sanctions against the ruling South African government and suppling weapons and surveillance systems to continue to repress the indigenous people. Times haven’t changed.
Eeeh, I give SA a lot of credit for bringing this trial and I don't hold the current SA government responsible for apartheid... but let's be careful to not minimize it.
I more or less agree, but I do think it’s kinda helpful for framing how bad it is in Gaza right now. If even South Africa is saying “this is a really horrible apartheid” that’s coming from a position of knowledge and experience. It’s the crimes against humanity equivalent of movie producer Robert Evans telling your friends that you have an extremely serious coke problem
