The five malicious apps are:
- Phone Cleaner - File Explorer (com.volabs.androidcleaner)
- PDF Viewer - File Explorer (com.xolab.fileexplorer)
- PDF Reader - Viewer & Editor (com.jumbodub.fileexplorerpdfviewer)
- Phone Cleaner: File Explorer (com.appiclouds.phonecleaner)
- PDF Reader: File Manager (com.tragisoap.fileandpdfmanager)
Maybe we need support for basic shit like file browsing and PDF viewing packaged with the OS? They still manage to make the OS require over 7 gigabytes of disk space, but can’t manage to squeeze this in?
I recently bought a Xiaomi Phone and was shocked how bad their filebrowser is. Full of ads and connections to other file apps like nextcloud are missing.
(I've installed lineageos now.)
Google won't put those things in AOSP because they lose the opportunity to promote their own apps with trackers.
I’m sure there are other examples, but Android is definitely the first instance I encountered of big corps trying to use “open source” as a benefit only to poison pill their offering into a nearly useless corner. One of the many examples of Google torching their positive reputation over the years.
