I am a neophyte, but was very interested in these specimens I saw in Linville Gorge.
How lovely.

Gotta lich 'em all!
I love the gorge!
I was actually shocked at how fucked up it is still from Helene. I guess I shouldn't have been though.
Haven't been since Helene. I'm about 4 hours south...but WNC is mostly so beautiful. Major Feels for the folks there, so badly impacted. Rain nonstop for a month, then Helene. They didn't stand a chance.
I just discovered this community and I'm psyched that it exists. I see so much amazing lichen in the PNW.
I am a long time casual mander observer, but recent subscriber. I think that this is a good place.
Really interesting to see that little goat trail devoid of lichen in the second photo. I assume this is the path most people and animals tread when walking up the slabs.
Me too, I actually sat and considered it for a second. I had your thought, but I also thought that maybe the water during heavy rains is accumulating there and making it harder for lichen to grow? I have no idea though.
You might be right, I think water makes more sense.
