The mystery rise of lung cancer in non-smokers
The leading cause seem to be Coal and Car traffic.
Then it's not a mystery. What immediate actions can be taken TODAY to reduce air pollution? Nevermind worrying about convenience, Governments need to do what they can to stop this madness.
In order of most emissions created:
1) stop exporting/importing goods using oil fueled cargo tankers and planes.
2) kill 99% of all cows and other large farm animals and keep the populations at natrual levels, no more meat industry except maybe chickens.
3) make it illegal to drive cars for non essential purposes. (And no, getting groceries and going to work wouldn't be essential)
To do this we need to spend a lot on public transit in the short term

Cows and other ruminants are huge contributors to global warming with methane emissions but not so much lung cancer causing particulates
I can support those. Seems like a no-brainer if we actually care about the world we leave future generations (and the air we breathe while we are still alive).

From the data I've seen, it's only trending downwards in rich countries, while getting worse in poor countries. Offloading pollution to poor countries isn't my idea of progress.
Another study posted here also showed that noise pollution is affecting millions, and killing tens of thousands each year. So it's not just air pollution, but all forms of pollution that need to be addressed, and it needed to be addressed decades ago.
Oil refineries are highly flammable.
