I want my network transparent apps back, and WITHOUT A GPU, wayland !
I want my network transparent apps back, and WITHOUT A GPU, wayland !
I have heard the dismissal, I have been told I don't matter, I have been told I'm a edge case.
But I'm telling you wayland, I chafe at you taking away my optionality.
Sometimes I need that feature, and when I need it, I need it bad !
I understand that the IBM money pouring into wayland is super happy about the linux world losing network transparency for apps, stripping power users of their inconvenient toys.
But I'm telling you, I need it.
No, waypipe isn't it.
Also, no longer having distinct window managers from the compositor give me serious bad vibes but this isn't what this is about
Maybe you can start by saying what it is that you need to do that waypipe doesn’t allow you to.
Yeah, OPs rant seems useless to any developer trying to be helpful.
There are quite a few people who might want to do something but have neither used the X ssh pass-through nor have any thoughts about waypipe.
It would be good if you could even just link to the feature requests you might have given on their forum/bug tracker/issues. And not Discord links. I for one, am not opening them.
It"s a compressed video stream, needs both an encoder and a decoder per forwarded app, and with a locked max of 3 or 4 of those per gpu, thats a serious, new constraint that didn't exist before. A lot more bandwidth and gpu as well for typical, flat applications. A computer that can only run 4 apps at a time, presumably shared with a full household, that is really crippling the whole idea.
But I see why IBM would salivate at the prospect of this becoming a premium and rare datacenter feature again.
That would be true if you didn’t have
—compress none
and—no-gpu
options. It took me about 30 seconds to find this information https://man.archlinux.org/man/extra/waypipe/waypipe.1.en
