What is the “Chat” option supposed to do and is it working?

I would have guessed it’s supposed to sort all comments by age, youngest on top, by first flattening them out of their tree structure.

From what I’ve seen that isn’t what’s happening.

Is it broken or am I misunderstanding it?

I think it to assist with discussion of realtime events such as sport e g f1. Trying to navigate posts in such a situation on the classic format was terrible
- Yes, that’s my guess too, but from what I’ve seen it’s not doing that and so I wonder if it’s got a bug.
  
  It used to work fine. New comments would appear automatically without you having to refresh the page.
  
  I don't remember if 0.18.1 or 0.18.2 borked it.
  
  It seems to work for me - it switches all replies to appear as top-level comments, and sorts everything by "Old."
