Why not endorse Firefox forks instead?
Because people know Firefox by name and it is good enough for most people. It is better that they use Firefox than not. Mozilla is way more trustworthy than both Google and Microsoft. Not everybody needs to get The Best©® by Nerd Standards™.
It's not about "Nerd Standards", it's about the fact there are reasons to not deem Mozilla so trustworthy anymore: https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-firefox-i-loved-is-gone-how-to-protect-your-privacy-on-it-now/ (I am linking the article for the facts it points out; in the author's place, I wouldn't recommend Brave either).
One reason is, that there is no guarantee that the forks are safe to use. Any claims for "privacy-focused", "secure", etc should be considered marketing terms until they are somehow sufficiently proven to be true. For example, Zen Browser is one of the many Firefox forks. Its developer has made some major mistakes and otherwise behaved in questionable manner, and have basically shown to be an inexperienced developer.
