I underestimated the overhead capacity of the middle rack of the dishwasher for years

...and other ways to underestimate a dishwasher.
- This is the video that convinced me to get the cheap powder detergent.
  
  We tried the cheap powder detergent based on the video and had terrible results. Did it just like he says, dishes kept getting residue on them. Tried adding citric acid, a little better but still not clean.
  Went back to the pods of liquid stuff. Dishes are clean again, glass shiny, all is well.
  
  and also to run the hot water tap before starting so that it has hot water from the start.
  
  Powder detergent is the way. When I open up the dishwasher at the end of the cycle and find clean dishes and no residual foam at the bottom of the machine I know that I used just the right dose.

wait, theres a middle rack??
- In most dishwashers the "middle rack" is just the top rack. You would know if you had a dishwasher with 3 racks. And to be fair, the third rack tends to not have a lot of headroom when you do have one. Can only fit silverware and small utensils.
  
  My middle rack sits out in the garage because it felt dumb.

sometimes the middle and/or top can be height adjusted easily. Allows for taller things on that shelf at cost to shelf below.
