Although I don't imagine they get a lot of hurricanes in Mali, that shape has been suggested to be something like hurricane and tornado resistant if not -proof.

Yes, although it's the other way around.
Tatooine is actually based on a real place in Tunisia (Tataouine) which is also near/inside the Sahara desert
