We have nukes in space, we just dont talk about them. There is 99% chance we still have derivitives of project Casaba Howitzer killsats mothballed in HEO, and I will not be convinced otherwise.
Sucks about the ISS tho.
Quite possibly not though, not because or morals or treaties, but just because an ICBM can hit any target an orbital nuke can, and can be launched instantly, while an orbital nuke will need to be over the target before it can launch, which could be as much as a 90 minute wait time until launch, depending on the orbit.
The killsats I'm conspirizing over weren't meant for ground targets. They could be used that way, but you're correct it would be very silly to do so. The plasma lance/cone would be heavily attenuated by the atmosphere, probably still hit like a nuke, but trading megatons of boom for kilotons of ground-effect. Awful offensive weapon.
The derivitives of Casaba Howitzer were for Reagan's Starwars program for taking out ICBM during their launch & orbital stages. Idea was a single Casaba could target multiple missles with its cone of fire, and give America First Strike capability with its standard arsenal of ICBMs & SSBNs.
This is the same era the US was toying with the idea of throwing up a kessler syndrome-worth of interceptor satellites and the Soviets were trying to clandestinely launch megawatt CO² lasers into orbit. Dont get me wrong, there's still so much classified you read more spaces than lines here. But I'm convinced in my bones there's still some old SDI testbeds still up there.
Imagine the cope and seethe when the only human space presence is China. Amerikkkan government can't give enough money to space, and elon rockets are a deathtrap.
Oh fuck yeah let's go, auctioning off the safe de-orbiting of a space station to the lowest bidder, I look forward to the WTYP about this unless one of the hosts gets very unlucky
Any bets on where it's going to land? My money is on a middle school
