Hexday 2024, Happy 4th year anniversary nerds!!! - New General Megathread for the 24th-26th of July 2024

On this day, 4 years ago the site was first launched (then a day later the first post made), Formed from chapotraphouse remnants, the old admins decided to make a site using Lemmy as its base. Originally called chapo.chat, Hexbear has grown into one of the biggest instances in the lemmyverse.

Despite various sitewide struggle sessions, wrecker incursions from other forums and federation drama, Hexbear has keep growing strong in its 4th year, now with 4 megathreads, over 4 million comments, 300k posts and much more.

Its being great running the general megathread for a bit over 3 years, since i took over i have tried to get it mostly in time and just one unlike during the old times, i like to think i have done a decent job, plus i have also added a bit of reading material to them so you nerds can learn from them and i like to think you have been reading them garcia-cock-shotty, its also nice to see the new megathreads how they have slowing grown up to the size to the old general mega in the time of the old admins.

dont have much else to say so have a good day nerd. also

  • What would you do if a person you don't know threatened you but you don't want to get involved with the police?

    • Is it actionable and if so how serious? If there is genuine danger to your life or long term well being (like, if the dude just wants to give you a beat down, these are not the instructions, I've had a stalker firebomb my house, this is advice for if it's at that point) then you may need to make yourself comfortable with the idea of maybe doing time, the law will not help you, if contacted they'll do nothing and if you defend yourself they'll punish you for it. Does this person know where you live? If so, home defense, keep your doors locked, barricade windows, if your door knob is metal you can hook it to jumper cables and a battery, if there's a vestibule get a chain lock so you can open it enough to flood the room with bear mace, if you have a hallway use fishing line to make trip wires at odd angles and height so someone else can't move through the hall as easy as you. Turn out all the lights cause you know your house better than them in the dark and keep a weapon nearby, something blunt like a wooden bat or piece of rebar, metal bats are hollow and don't hurt much. Do not use knives ever.

If you're out and about, don't go alone, have people around who preferably can fight. Any hard metal object that you can carry to use as a bludgeon is gonna be the best weapon you can have.

Next thing is, do you think this guy will let off? Cause generally if they get fucked up the first time they're gonna come back harder the next. If there is a fight, it's best to try to have the guy leave it with their pride intact, easier said than done but at least if you come out on top.dont be gloaty or get in any more shots than necessary. I wouldn't do anything between bruises and a hospital stay, you don't want a dude who's only gonna be hurting for a day or two brooding about it, if there's gonna be brooding make it for a long time and over an injury that will.make next time harder for them cause its still just buying time

Now, it's usually not such a zero sum game, diplomacy will get you the furthest although you may need to swallow your pride and tell.the other dude whatever they wanna hear. Have a mutual be a go between. Do what you can to diffuse it and avoid things escalating, it's better to just give the baby his bottle even if it's humiliating, you live to fight another day and anyone who goes around threatening people will bite off more than they can chew one day, but that ends with one person in the hospital or morgue and the other in prison. Don't let it get to that point at ALL costs but if it can't be avoided, your self preservation is worth an assault charge.

      • I was walking and a large pickup truck slowed down; he asked if I knew the house around the corner with the fence and a dog and I said yes. He asked if I knew somebody, I said no because I didn't, and he then said "yes you do" before jumping into like 30 seconds of threats. I know the house he's talking about but I don't know anyone who lives there or on that street. I don't think he followed me home but he was in a generic large white pickup truck and there were a few of those on the way back.

A long while back someone mentioned out their window that there was a guy in a truck harassing people so it may be the same guy with a pattern of doing this. I have no idea if he'll stop, I have no plans to go back down that street but I have family that lives a block away around the corner so it's not impossible he'll see me again, it's also a relatively small suburbs.

I used to have a small pepper spray I carried with me so I was going to get another one of those and I thought about a taser but I don't know anything about them.

        • Tasers are generally not legal to carry and often not even to own, although I'm not American. They're also no fucking joke, we'd obtained one during this incident and you crack it on and see that electric arc and hear the snapping, they're scary. If it's just some creep in a truck and he's been not specifically targeting you, keeping some pepper spray should be fine.
