676 Banned Books List

I couldn't find the list in a text copy-able format, so I OCR'd it and tried to do the best I could. I am missing a book somewhere, my count is 675, so I'm assuming I messed something up. Please feel welcome to take, copy, share, request edits, FTFY, as well as make sure these books are still in your library. I haven't read them but the people trying to get rid of them are a bit close-minded and could probably benefit from reading things on this list. Apologies if I've messed anything up. I wrapped the table in a spoiler so your screen doesn't stroke out. Okay, Thanks!!!

For being a bunch of religious ding-dongs, they really missed the bus by keeping 10 books on this list.

  • Oh, and if you were wondering about the context, this is the list that a select few people have been using to enact several bans throughout the US. Example here.

    • Putting it into a spreadsheet would allow you to sort it any which way, depending on mood, which might help organize the list better?

      just a thought..

Thank you for making this post, to make this more visible..

      • No doubt. I can do that and probably should have, but I read an article about this list and any forums discussing the access to it only ever referred to one site with images as the only source. The articles occasionally indicated that the list was made public on social media but they never indicated when and where. So, more than anything, I just wanted to get the list into a copypasta format that others could use. I'm under a heavy work load at the moment, but once available I can throw a spreadsheet together with some sorting options.

  • There are some weird choices in here. Skimming the list I can see a few things I've read that surprise me. Fable by Adrienne Young is just a fairly generic YA fantasy thing for example, I can't think of anything in that that would bother anyone. Victor & Nora: A Gotham Love Story is a melancholy backstory of a Batman villain, this is insane. I see a Catwoman book in there too, but it's by Sarah J Maas and everything of hers appears to have been blanket-banned. I'm assuming that was included because Harley and Ivy are in it and they're probably bi in that universe.

How were these books chosen? Was it just a ctrl+f for words they didn't like? There are some things missing that I'd have expected to see based on what I read back in high school, but I was more of a public library kid than a school library one because that's where you could find the good stuff.

  • Thanks for providing the nicely formatted list!

Skimming through the list, I don't think I haven't read anything from the list, except for A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Throne), though I do have some Cassandra Clare books that are in the list. Is this related to LGBTQ+? Seems to be, according to title of some books...

    • No problem at all. I know this was a very niche post loosely related to the purpose of the community, but I was hoping that others that wanted to see the list these bad actors were using could find it here. And you're probably right, I think someone did a word search for words like "boobs" and added those to the list. I personally want to ensure that my child is learning to respect everyone so I would use this to find books that religious people find to be dangerous as a pretty decent guide. Lol, I don't intend to be oppositionally defiant, but if a theocratic nationalist said to not read something I would absolutely read it. And as soon as I saw Maus on the list I knew it would be worth a gander.
