[Vote] Should we pre-emptively defederate Threads?
Threads will be implementing federation in the near future and many instances have been discussing whether they should be pre-emptively defederated to protect the fediverse. See below for our local discussion thread, which will remain active until this vote is complete.
Given that this is a time-sensitive issue and it's the holiday season, we decided to initiate the vote a few days early to make sure everyone gets a chance to vote. The vote will be tallied on Friday, December 29th.
i followed the discussion on lemmy world and honestly I dont see the harm their presence would cause to us. We benefit when they bring more people to our platform.
for now I will say no.
depending on the outcome in the future I may reconsider
I’m more concerned about the quality rather than the quantity of users. From what I’ve seen of F/B and the ‘Gram (I’ve never had an account on either) I can’t see where any uptick in quality would come from. Zuck’s platforms seem entirely geared to people who want to talk about themselves and their (self-edited) lives; whilst you drown in adverts. That’s the diametric opposite of why I browse lemmy/mastodon. The blue bird and the funny alien are not really options these days (for different reasons) so the fediverse is where I’m at.
I agree with you on that point. That's the reason I'd change my mind if I started to see quality deteriorate.
What is the harm in trying and de-federate later if things didn't go well.
I hold that view because I’m jaded and cynical. Experience shows many a beautiful thing destroyed just to maximise owner/share-holder profit. Meta only exists to drive profit. I cannot see a single benefit that mindset would bring. I hope I’m wrong…
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't one of the main issues that this would entice users over from fediverse instance accounts to threads accounts? Once theads dominates the fediverse they can they begin enshitification of the user offering. Whilst all this was happening, the non threads aspects of the fediverse have received less feature updates and attention and are unlikely to receive any as they have very little traffic.
I think the fear is that federating with them will offer short term gains at a long term cost. Without them, the fediverse has a higher chance of becoming something great over the long term. With them, it has a higher chance of growing fast but stalling progress in the platform.
why would users who left reddit for lemmy to be free from corporate, would switch to threads.
But even if users want to switch to threads, I think this is their freedom and their right.
