[Vote] Should we pre-emptively defederate Threads?
Threads will be implementing federation in the near future and many instances have been discussing whether they should be pre-emptively defederated to protect the fediverse. See below for our local discussion thread, which will remain active until this vote is complete.
Given that this is a time-sensitive issue and it's the holiday season, we decided to initiate the vote a few days early to make sure everyone gets a chance to vote. The vote will be tallied on Friday, December 29th.
This is ridiculous. It does nothing but inconvenience people who want shared content. I want the personal ability to chose my content. Removing that at the instance level just takes that away from me.
If they want your data they'll download it with or without federation.
This is the voting thread, not the discussion thread. While your simplistic take is, well, simplistic, there is more at stake here. Is evildouche going to take all our data? Of course it will. I was never on Facebook and have no interest in seeing a post from there. If you want that then go there, don't bring that garbage here.
Lemmy will grow or not, I am more than happy the way it is.
I was, and still am, not a big user on FB but still. I welcome the general population to federate with the current group.
I thought this was a fediverse where different groups would be federated together? The logic of not federating with meta shows how shallow that vision actually is.
If the current fediverse is so great, it should easily survive Meta. The fear makes me think folks don't think it could.
We're all entitled to our opinions. Please don't downplay mine by calling them simplistic.
No matter how much you tell these sorts of people that, they just don't get it. They think defederation is what will stop them, and that the only reason threads exists and it's federating is to take everyone's data. It's so stupid.
