  • Idk, this gets a pass from me. More so before all the new shows came out though, those are easy to love.

The old stuff is difficult to get into though, and there is usually a lot of bad writing, poor production values and terrible acting to get past before it starts getting good.

And sadly a lot of 60's and 90's Trek fans are bigoted old men, which is another mark against the show for anyone with a passing interest who's met a Trekkie of this caliber irl or looked into fan spaces online.

    • a lot of 60's and 90's Trek fans are bigoted old men

I call bullshit on this. What Trekkies are bigots? I've never met or heard of anyone IRL or online that is a fan of Star Trek who didn't believe most of the tenants of the show, including tolerance and inclusion.

      • Agreed. While examples where those ideals fall short can be found in every iteration, there is a visible change over time. We're in the middle of a great 3rd resurgence, or "Latinum Age" if you will, and things are looking brighter than ever.

      • Yeah, I can't see it either. I mean, there are/were Republicans who thought RAtM wasn't about them, so I'm sure there are some old bigoted people who are Trek fans. I can't imagine it being a lot.

      • If you're a white guy you're unlikely to see or be on the recieving end of bigotry from these types of people.

The trek boards on reddit were vile when Discovery came out, if anyone remembers that? Hundreds of pissed off trek fans adamant that a black woman should not be the main character and hating that there were no men on the bridge. And even before then the asian wife jokes, misogyny and rape jokes about Keiko were a regular occurence.

The show writers making episodes like the Kira porn holonovel also didn't help, Quark should have been kicked off the station for that. It's not very star trek to let sexual harrassment happen so blatently, is it? Oh wait, yeah no it was fine. Slap on the wrists, no big deal. Is it surprising that some viewers of the show took that moral lesson to heart because 'trek is a bastion of good and can do no wrong'? Bashir skulking around begging Dax for a date and monologing about winning his prize, was creepy as fuck too.Trek is so pure though, men who behave like that must be ok because it was in trek! Amirite?

You guys need to keep in mind there's a huge cross over between nerds and incels, and between star trek fans and old white guys who like imagining white guys in charge of exploring space and getting to fuck all the alien women.

Trek nerds can be shit people too. You aren't immune just because the show you like has some morals.

        • Hundreds of pissed off trek fans adamant that a black woman should not be the main character

No one should be the main character in star trek, it's always been about groups of people working together to overcome difficulties, Discovery shat on that and created a character who's always right no matter what. People shat on Picard for the same reason.

hating that there were no men on the bridge

SNW has what, 3 men in the whole main cast? People love it.

Quark also almost caused Jadzia's death when he let in the guy who wanted to steal her symbiont, it's just a bit of bad writing where they shouldn't let a main character they intend to keep cross certain lines.

Bashir skulking around begging Dax for a date and monologing about winning his prize, was creepy as fuck too

Who said people liked that? Everyone says the first two seasons of DS9 were bad, for many reasons.

You guys need to keep in mind there's a huge cross over between nerds and incels

You should stop trying so hard to find reasons to hate people. Incel is a derogatory term, by the way, in its base interpretation it's just someone who can't get a partner, not necessarily a vile person. You're the one being toxic in this case.

old white guys who like imagining white guys in charge of exploring space and getting to fuck all the alien women.

Worf's one of the most beloved characters, and the one with the most episodes, and he's black.

No one's saying Trek's perfect, but you should stop trying to find faults in its fandom just for the sake of being contrarian.

        • Flip side? Uhura is fucking awesome and inspired my mum (now 86) to become a lifelong Trek fan. I'm also a lifelong fan, and I've been able to introduce it to my wife, who is also a fan now.

In summary, there's plenty of Trek fans who aren't straight white cisgendered men, and the number of toxic morons in this cohort feels much much less than in just about any other mainstream fandom.
