Some context would be cool.
"Compagnie della Morte" were troops of WW1 Italy who took on dangerous tasks, such as disarming barbed wire before a general assault. The armor, as seen here, is very... distinctive.
Forlorn Hopes? Also the pose is very...gangsta and contrasts with the Medieval-esque armor.
I don't think they were meant as assault troops, unlike the later Arditi.
