my gender is as solid as water slipping through my hands. that also happens to fall directly into smoking oil.
Hello every buddy. :] A friend & comrade pointed me to this site and the first thing i said was "this is literally everything i was led to believe bluesky would be"
Super grateful to be shown the true light. The disillusionment with butterfly app..... it is gnarly. I am being silly about it, but when I've been doing what i can to help another trans friend (who's Black and disabled) in the middle of needing to be rehoused (needing for the past months... well. it is also frustrating & scary! Completely different feeling to when i come here and immediately see Palestinian donation incentives on the front page.
This site has been a breath of fresh air. But i'm also so confused. LOL. What's it like here? Did i miss any etiquette? what do you guys talk about the most? What do you call this type of social media? Is it even a social media?! -- Feel free to answer one or all or none, I'm just happy to be here.
Would it be ok to drop some art, too?? Queer & trans art (& gay people in beautiful landscapes) is the #1 thing i love drawing & sharing most but, I've failed to connect with anyone who cares about the same things i do T_T especially anyone queer.
AHHH and if it peaks any interest at all!! 100% of my commission funds has been supporting my previous mentioned friend, Mem. They're waiting on approval but still hundreds of dollars out to afford mover/cleaners/first month rent. I'd be glad to compensate any support you give. I've a form here: https://forms.gle/FrbRSDA3SgNnYjwR9
You can also just donate directly: linktr.ee/torqu111
(it is time-sensitive, so please don't use GFM for the time being!)
I may lurk, but am always open to messaging and meeting you all from here on out [ big teethy smile ]
Hello! I think you may have got the overall rundown of site culture mostly. The actual space itself is like reddit for the commies and without the downvotes (I think the upvotes should go, too, but that's my stupid axe to grind). I don't think I would consider it "social media" as such, more like a web forum, but maybe that's wrong idk. The main developers of the software which powers the site, Lemmy, are Marxist-Leninists, which is very cool imo.
I wanted to introduce myself as another covid conscious individual -- check out c/covid and c/disabled -- and also to give you the skinny on general attitude re: all of that here which may go unsaid otherwise. For all the good and fun that can be had here (and there are a lot of funny, well-meaning and intelligent people!) there is a gross & often unacknowledged undercurrent of the sort of typical minimization I'm sure you're intimately familiar with that I think is only fair should be aired upfront. While hexbear is by and large still the best and most frequently proven space of covid awareness that I've seen of even communist/leftist spaces online (who, let's be real, should absolutely know better by now and somehow always manage to disappoint) there is a palpable air of "don't ask don't tell" about the actual practice, e.g. militant, diligent masking, advocacy, and that particular intersection of working class organization; along those lines there are still very, very frequent "vax and relax" brainworms at best, if you manage to ever even see it brought up at all outside of the respective "zone" for it. That said, I am very glad to see you for this reason!! Your art is wonderful and I hope you stick around.
oh yeah and we got probably the single largest userbase of explicitly queer/trans communist users on the English speaking web and that is at least worth mentioning!
We the COVID conscious left desperately need an org or SOMETHING it is ridiculous in organizing spaces and etc there’s almost. Almost no orgs at least I hear of from my corner of the world (US…) that has a strict line on this contradiction.
If there is anything at all it is left to local jurisdiction, pretty much. In my experience living in one of the more progressive cities of the US (for what little that shit matters these days) there is still almost no masking anywhere. I have tried to bring it up at various gatherings and demos and I always get brushed off or told I’m a wrecker or something lol. Or, what I think is even worse, they’ll go “oh yeah that makes a lot of sense” and then still don’t change their behavior at all. Seeing masks dropped from healthcare should have been an immediate red line stance for everyone and…crickets. I have a lot of pretty doomer things to say about it but here and now is not the place or time for it. All I can think to do is keep calling it out and being a living reminder of everyone’s negligence until they finally do something or listen for once.
