You can find other solutions, which I did not like, because they required an X server running in the background or did not combine overclocking features with the ability of setting a custom fan curve.
Personally I am using it to set a positive clock offset together with a lower power limit, basically maintaining the same performance, but with better efficiency. I am combining this with a custom curve so the GPU stays silent, even under load.
I thought this tool might be useful for others as well, but note that it is still under testing and it is impossible for me to guarantee that it works on every hardware, so use it at your own risk! Don't just set mindless parameters and double check if it is working as intended, before adding it to startup.

I dont like all the spyware they put down your throat, the forced updates and reboots. I bought a msi notbook back in march 2023 and i already heard linux would not run on it. So i had to use Windows 11. I did not like it but sadly had to use it till a few months ago. I read the kernel got alot of MSI EC updates. First thing i tried is Pop OS again. It worked perfectly fine on this machine. Played my older Command & Conquer games on it and where running great too. Next install was Star Wars Jedi Survivor, this game ran like shit on windows. The galaxy map had a huge fos drop, some world had random lags. Well all these problems where gone in Pop! OS 22.04.
When i played games on Linux back in 2021 i really did not think games would run better in Linux compared to Windows. But it is really possible. I am quite happy with Pop! OS and Linux in general. I want to say thanks to the whole linux community.

Hearts of Iron 4: Runs 50% faster on Linux, in a heavy mod like Millennium Dawn, in my tests. Game loading time is like 30 seconds on Linux to 5 minutes in Windows, in Millennium Dawn. So I don't play HOI4 on Windows anymore. Definitely play on Linux.
Europa Universalis 4: Runs better on Linux, significant loading time difference compared to Windows.
Stellaris: I didn't test it, but it uses same engine as HOI4 and EU4, so I guess there would be similar results.
Daggerfall Unity, heavily modded: This game from 1996 is demanding resources like it is a brand new game on Windows but runs so smoothly on Linux. Definitely play on Linux.
Not much difference, or worse in Linux:
Crusader Kings 3: Don't have much difference. Some heavy mods like AGOT are running better on Windows.
Victoria 3: I didn't see much difference.

The original was posted on /r/linux_gaming by /u/Ok-Pace-1900 on 2024-09-27 23:09:22+00:00. *** Hi there it's me again, I have great news for the people that use Sarek and the ones that may use it in the future :), so lets start. A small introduction of what its Proton-Sarek for the people that dont the project:
Proton-Sarek (Proton-For-Old-Vulkan) its a custom Proton build with DXVK 1.10.3 for users with GPUs that support Vulkan 1.1+ but not Vulkan 1.3, or for those with non-Vulkan support who want a plug-and-play option featuring personal patches.
Why it does exist?:
Because there are still users with GPUs that support Vulkan 1.1+ but not Vulkan 1.3, as well as others with non-Vulkan support. Those who can use DXVK often rely on older Proton versions, which suffer from lower compatibility and performance compared to newer builds. Meanwhile, users dependent on WineD3D frequently face poor gaming experiences. This repository provides patched versions of Proton and/or Proton-GE, offering better performance with DXVK v1.10.3 and significant improvements to WineD3D, ensuring a smoother experience for both Vulkan and non-Vulkan setups.
Time for the good news!!!!:
First of all, Sarek is now future-proof. Why? Because I won’t be working on this small project alone anymore. Some of my closest friends have decided to join me, and with their support, it doesn't matter if I don’t have time to make a specific release, they’ve got my back, and you’ll still get your new release.
Secondly, for now, only Steam is officially supported, but Wine-Sarek could become a reality in about a month or so, offering official support for any launcher that uses Wine to run games (Lutris, Bottles, Heroic Launcher, etc.).
Here’s a little more about what Wine-Sarek could be and its features:
- It will be based on Valve’s latest Wine Bleeding Edge:
- It will include all the patches from Proton-Sarek, such as WineD3D with command stream and command serialization, using OpenGL 4.6 as the maximum version instead of 4.4 as is common in most builds; Proton Global Prefix patches, and more.
- Keep in mind that the main goal of our team is to provide a decent experience for people using low-end or older hardware. Those with mid- to high-end PCs will likely not see an improvement in FPS.
- For this reason, only DXVK 1.10.3 and DXVK 1.10.3 async will receive our full support when issues arise. While we won’t leave users that use newer versions or use VKD3D behind, we hope you understand that they are not the primary focus of our work, at least for now, as we are limited by time and manpower. However, you will still receive support.
- There's already a private testing build of Wine-Sarek, based on Valve experimental-wine-bleeding-edge-9.0-123638-20240926-pf0364f-w2bff94-d78f513-v486dd4, working with the patches that are on the current Proton-Sarek Build, the thing it's that it have some performance issues on some games and glitches in general. It needs work, but I think we can deliver a very good build. Once all its working we will release one public testing version, take feedback and see if that version or the next can be the first stable build.
Third(Bug report, you can skip this if you want), sometimes, when using WineD3D, the maximum supported OpenGL version is capped at 4.4 instead of the expected 4.6. This appears to be a glitch that can be temporarily resolved by following these steps:
- Start the game using a different Proton version.
- Once the game is running and rendering properly, close it.
- Switch back to the desired Sarek Proton build.
- Open the game, and it should now use the correct OpenGL version.
I’m still investigating a permanent solution to this issue, but this workaround has proven effective in the meantime.
Well thanks for reading, if you want to support us, feedback on the builds and sharing our work it's highly appreciated. That's all for now :), take care, Good Luck and Have Fun.

It just doesn't make sense to me for every major development studio to be purposely disabling Linux compatibility for the hell of it. Like GTA V. My buddy was working with BattlEye, and by default it allows the Linux / proton versions. So it took actual thought to break every steam deck, and every Linux machine's ability to play GTA Online. It seems like there has to be outside motivation is all I'm saying. Is Microsoft paying these studios to disable Linux compatibility? I apologize in advance if this is conspiracy, but I do want to see what y'all think. I'm hoping that some day we can band together to fix this permanently, or get enough of the market share to actually mean something to the studios. How would we even go about that?

The original was posted on /r/linux_gaming by /u/Ok-Pace-1900 on 2024-09-24 21:37:29+00:00. *** Hi there ;), I come here to announce the fourth release of Sarek, or
Proton-For-Old-Vulkan, my small custom Proton with DXVK 1.10.3 for
people that have GPUs that support Vulkan 1.1+ but not Vulkan 1.3 or
have non Vulkan support and that want a plug-and-play option with
personal patches.
So what its new?
Stable Build: =============
Based on Proton-GE-9-14, now working with DXVK 1.10.3 and more
WineD3D:
Now just like the Testing Build, Sarek-Stable will use by default OpenGL 4.6 while using WineD3D, with command stream and command serialization, the stability with this configuration its the same of the prior build.
Note: Proton and Wine typically support a maximum version of OpenGL 4.4 when using WineD3D. While using OpenGL 4.6 may not provide a significant or even decent performance boost, it helps reduce stuttering on older or low-end hardware.
Note: The errors on S.T.A.L.K.E.R Call Of The Zone when using WineD3D with OpenGL 4.6, command stream and command serialization had been fixed.
Stable Async Build: ===================
A new build :). Its just like the Stable build but will use DXVK 1.10.3 Async instead of the normal one.
Why DXVK Async?
Why? Simple, performance. The key difference in DXVK Async is that it enables asynchronous shader compilation, whereas the regular DXVK uses synchronous compilation.
In regular DXVK, when a game encounters new shaders, they are compiled synchronously, causing the game to stutter or freeze briefly while the shader is being processed. This is because the game must wait for the compilation to finish before continuing.
In DXVK Async, the shaders are compiled in the background while the game continues running. Instead of freezing or stuttering, the game proceeds, though there might be minor graphical artifacts until the shaders are fully compiled.
Then why isn't on the normal version?
While DXVK Async offers significant performance improvements by reducing stuttering through asynchronous shader compilation, it carries a potential risk of triggering client-side anti-cheat systems in multiplayer games. This risk exists because the tool modifies how shaders are handled, which might be interpreted as a cheat or manipulation by some anti-cheat software.
Although there haven't been any confirmed cases of players getting banned for using DXVK Async, the possibility remains. Given this, I personally wouldn’t take the chance with something as valuable as a Steam account.
Testing Build: ==============
At the moment, there’s no need for a separate Testing Build, since the Stable Build has caught up in terms of features and performance. That being said, I am working on new configurations that show promise, but they are still in the early stages and too unstable to release, even as part of a Testing build. Once further refinement is done, I'll share them for broader testing.
Thats all for now :P, hope that you enjoy your gaming.

PROTON_LOG=1
as indicated in the Proton FAQ. Unfortunately for us humans, these Wine debug logs tend to be rather unwieldy.I originally posted about Wine Log Explorer on r/wine\_gaming, but it seems to work well for Proton logs, too. It is a web tool which parses debug log files into interactive tree structures, including the ability to filter by process / thread + searching in free text: see the screenshot below.
It's fully client-side, so no files leave your browser. Hopefully this tool can help clarify why a game behaves or crashes in a certain way, in particular for games that prevent attaching debuggers.
